Here is a small exerpt from the book. I'll be posting these from time to time, so stay tuned!
What she saw next made her freeze. Soldiers wearing olive drab
uniforms streamed in from the hole in the wall where the exit once
was, and were moving rapidly around the side walls. Their heads swiveled
constantly as if they were watching a tennis match, and in their
hands they held tightly what looked like police batons. There was
fluidity about their movement that gave the appearance they were
gliding like ice skaters. Their mouths continuously moved, but no
audible voices could be heard coming from them. The people in the
office yelled louder when they saw the soldiers come in, and this only
added to the frenzy. A few people ran to them with their hands in the
air, but they were pushed back violently to the ground.
Mary rolled back over to all fours to get out from underneath
the table to try and stand up. As she did, she saw the mass of bodies
crammed by the elevator like helpless cornered rodents. They
yelled and climbed over each other trying to pry open the doors with
their hands. Beyond that, a man swung wildly at one of the cracked
windows with some sort of blunt object in his hands. He looked like
someone furiously trying to chop wood. His Pyrrhic victory sadly
paid off, and as soon as the window shattered open he was pushed to
the side and people attempted to squeeze through the elongated rectangular
opening. Certain death was to follow if they went through the window, and it was a sick sight to watch the desperation of those
who tried to escape.
